Reporting Suspicious Incidents

What Is Suspicious Activity?

Suspicious Activity is an event taking place that is out of the ordinary or should not be occurring. Knowing your neighbors, their habits, and the composition of their households will make it easier to recognize and report any suspicious activities occurring in your neighborhood.

How To Report Suspicious Activity?

  When reporting suspicious activity, persons or vehicles, dial 911;

  State whether you have an emergency. If you say no, it is possible that you may be put on hold for a few seconds so that the 911 operator may check the other lines;

  Stay on the phone and answer all questions. Do not hang-up until the Operator tells you to! Follow the directions of the Operator. He or she is trained for emergency situations and will guide you through the entire process;

  Give your specific location;

  Be sure to remain calm and speak clearly.

What the 911 Operator May Ask You:

  Your name, address, phone number and N/W ID #

  What is happening;

  A description of the suspect and/or suspect's vehicle;

  The direction the suspect was heading;

  The vehicle license number.

WHY USE 911?

  Responding quickly and accurately is important. A large number of arrests are made as a result of information that was provided by citizens.

  The apprehension of one criminal, especially a burglar, may be the key to other crimes already committed and will definitely reduce any future crimes.

  Others in your community will greatly appreciate your efforts.

  The time it takes to respond to a crime in progress is a determining factor in the apprehension of a criminal. A delay in reporting a crime by a couple of minutes greatly reduces law enforcement effectiveness. Commit to calling in ALL suspicious activity without delay. It is better to call in a few mistakes than to have one person on your watch become the victim of a crime.
