Objectives of Neighborhood Watch

Nationally and internationally, the “Neighborhood Watch” concept has become the mainstay of progressive police and other community agencies in their efforts to reduce crime. Where they have been instituted, neighborhood watch programs have had the measurable effect of reducing crime and the fear of crime.

Equally important is the effect neighborhood watch activities have on the way we feel about our safety. By working together to protect ourselves, we become involved in and have control over our homes, and neighborhoods. This concept of joining with our neighbors for a common goal is simply an extension of the block clubs, and similar organizing structures, that have been in existence for years.

Neighborhood Watch Comes Of Age

Neighborhood Watch has grown into the greatest most effective contribution to community safety that can be made by all members of our society. It has evolved to occupy a position of strength based on positive action and partnership reflecting all that is best in citizenship. Its members actively play their part in society by looking after their homes, their neighborhoods and their communities.

The objectives of the Ann Arbor Police Department's Neighborhood Watch Program are as follows:

PROMOTE proactive strategies to enhance public safety and build a sense of community.

INITIATE community problem solving in established neighborhoods and in response to public safety concern in targeted program areas.

MAINTAIN public safety communication network in all neighborhoods.

CONTINUE to promote outreach programs in the neighborhood:

What Neighborhood Watch Is Not...

Neighborhood Watch Is Not:
• A vigilante force working outside the normal procedure of law enforcement;
•• A program designed for participants to take personal risks to prevent crime;
••• A 100% guarantee that crime will not occur in your neighborhood.
